ARCCS Wheel Route Assistant data collection app

Privacy Policy

Information that we collect

We collect information from you in two ways. We do not collect data at any other time.

1. Information that you give us

When you installed the app you completed some general information about yourself and the wheelchair you use. This includes:

  • Type of chair used

  • Additional features of your wheelchair

  • Type and level of your injury

  • Age

  • Gender

  • Years since injury

  • Level of wheelchair handling skills

  • Body strength

  • Body endurance

This information is stored and shown in the user profile on the phone app. It is also sent to our cloud service storage with the detail of each journey that is recorded by you (see below).

We do not ask for any personally identifying details such as your name or contact details.

2. Information that we collect from your phone

When you select to start a journey in the app, we will collect information until you select stop. This data includes:

Device specific information

We collect the unique device identifier of your mobile phone, this is called the IMEI-number. It is a string of characters that is incorporated into a device by its manufacturer and can be used to uniquely identify that device.

We also collect the manufacturer name and model of your phone. For example, “Samsung GT-I9505”.

Logged data about journeys you make

The app reads and stores data from the mobile phone sensors. These are the accelerometer which measures acceleration forces and is used to determine speed, the gyroscope measure the angle of rotation which is used to work out orientation and the magnetometer which measures the strength of the magnetic field in three dimensions and is used to determine direction of travel.

We collect GPS data to determine the latitude, longitude and altitude.

The GPS and sensor data are recorded with a date/time stamp.

This data is sent along with the data about you and your chair for each journey that you record using start journey / stop journey in the app.  It is sent automatically when you stop the journey.

Optional additional data about journeys you make

Additionally you may choose to enter free text comments about obstacles in the journey, or comments that may be of use to other wheelchair users.

How we use the information that we collect

We will use the information that we collect for two purposes.

We will use the data for research purposes, for example to automatically determine features in the surface of the pavement or road.

Future app development

It is our aim that we will develop an app that allows wheelchair users to plan accessible routes. This route planning app will be informed by the data that is collected from this data collection app. This is the primary purpose for collecting the information.

The app sends data which is stored on Dropbox. All data is encrypted before transfer and files stored online by Dropbox are encrypted and kept in secure storage servers. Dropbox storage servers are provided by a managed service provider, and their infrastructure is located in data centres across the United States. Details of Dropbox security and privacy can be found at:

We may share the information with other researchers. Any data shared in this way will not be per.

We will retain the information that has been stored in the cloud services, even if you no longer use the app. You may request that your data be removed by contacting us.

Compliance with regulatory authorities

All data will be collected and stored in accordance with the Data Protection Act 1998.

By using this app you accept this privacy policy.
